From 1st October 2010 those aged 21 qualify for the full adult rate of NMW (National Minimum Wage). Previously the adult rate was payable only to those aged 22 or more (see Minimum Wage/2008 and 2009 increases). The new rates in force from 1st October 2010 are: £5.93 per hour for low paid workers aged 21 and over £4.92 per hour for 18-20 year olds £3.64 per hour for 16-17 year olds More information for ELE members in the Managers Toolkits. Starting from 2012 large employers will contribute 3% to employees’ pension schemes as standard. The scheme will be introduced in stepped stages to cover medium and small employers by 2016.  If the employer doesn’t operate a pension scheme they will be able to offer Nest, the government’s model. Employees will be automatically enrolled unless they opt out. The full contribution will be made up of tax relief, employer and employee’s contribution. Employees who claim a defence of whistleblowing to excuse themselves from misconduct allegations and dismissal proceedings need to think twice as demonstrated by this article in the Irish Times where a bank employee raided the Bank’s database to discover how much bonus his colleagues had been paid. Sour grapes or public interest?
